Sunday Stream of Short Stuff

I’m exhausted, so this is going to be quick.

I spent the weekend in Bakersfield with family. It was truly lovely. Minus the part where my grandma took a Vicodin before dinner tonight and was then in rare form the rest of the evening. She snuck in comments about my older (perfect) sister’s shirt being a maternity shirt (she’s not pregnant), my younger (angstful teenage) sister’s hair color and told me that she wanted me, and especially me, to know she’d lost 17 pounds. It was bizarre. Also entertaining.

I have a week off. I’m so excited, I hardly know what to do with myself. The sad thing is, I’ll probably spend a chunk of it studying.

My cat is mad at me for spending the week at my sister’s house during exams. I suspect his anger will end at around 7 tomorrow morning when the hunger takes over all his brain functions.

I’m in desperate need of good moisturizers for my face and good lip balm for extremely chapped lips. In the year since I moved back to California my skin has been a wreck. It misses the moist New Orleans air like you wouldn’t believe. I’ve been using a neutrogena product (part of an acne prevention line) and when I ran out switched to clinique, but I’m not really happy with either. And my lips are so dry they’re cracked and bleeding. I could desperately use some suggestions here.

I made two cobblers (peach and blackberry) and cake balls this weekend. It’s ridiculous how much I still love baking. I’m making more cake balls for Slappy’s family later this week. I’m ready to up the ante and start really decorating them now, I think. We’ll see. It might be a total disaster.

I get to go to Utah on Thursday! My best friend from high school lives there, so I sent her an email and we’re going to have lunch. I haven’t seen her since my wedding, but she’s one of those people that you just want to spend every moment with. She’s genuine and loving and makes you feel like such a treasured friend. Not to mention her two adorable red headed kids. I really need her to live closer, but for now we’ll just enjoy this great opportunity. I’m equally excited about this conference, but the idea of just getting to sit and catch up with an old friend is delightful.

I had a massive headache all day. And about 5 minutes ago my face started tingling. I think that’s my body’s really subtle way of telling me that it’s way past time for me to go to sleep and end this day.

Happy Father’s Day and Happy Second Mother’s Day to all those moms who are both a mom and a dad for their kids. You’re so appreciated and so important.

  • Lip balm – the best I have ever ever had is Kiehls. I will try to pick some up for you this week.

As for moisturizer…hmm. I am a sweaty mess thanks to my last pregnancy, but pre-crazy hormones, I swore by cetaphil unscented lotion. My skin was great with it. You can get it at CVS and it’s CHEAP!

  • Whoa, grandma! I did hear, and learn, recently that Vicodin makes you talk, and a bit louder. LOL.

SO. I found out recently that Origins is owned by Estee Lauder, who does animal testing. Which makes me think I need to find another option.
But I have been enjoying their moisturizers for years. So. LMK if you want more info on that… Hempz is Amazing for body lotion.

  • I use Aveeno for moisturizer. Now that I’m an old bat, my skin is very thirsty.

Try shopping at http://www.smallflower.com, aka Merz Apothecary out of Chicago for great all-natural lip balms.

  • I had never heard of cake balls before so I did a quick Google search. May I say that people make cakes in some very unexpected shapes? Just sayin’.

http://www.philosophy.com/ makes a stellar lip gloss (Kiss Me SPF 20) that does wonders for my uber-chapped lips. If I use it 2-3 times a day for a week my lips heal completely. Then I forget and leave it in a desk drawer for a month and have to start all over again. All their products are very high quality though, and I like their quirky packaging.

For chapped lips I have a few suggestions (bc I am having the SAME problem since I moved from Humid DC to not so humid Chicago)

This is my hands down fav. Its a little pricey but WHOA the wonders!

This one is great for the more budget aware (plus smells nice and works GREAT on elbows [another dry stop for me]):

    Here is another:

  • The best cheapy thing I’ve used on my lips (I struggled with cracked/bleeding lips for almost two months!) was Burt’s Bees medicated lip balm with the red lid. But I’ve also heard really good stuff about Aquaphor, another drug store brand.

I use cetaphil with SPF during the day and Burt’s Bees Acne control moisturizer at night. For really dry skin I would try the cetaphil moisturizing cream. It comes in a tub, whereas the sunscreen kind comes in a pump bottle. Good luck!

  • I go home every year to the very dry west – usually in the winter. So I totally understand your need for moisturizer and lip balm. However, my recommendations are for Clinique, so maybe you’ve already tried them. The Moisture Surge Extra is my all-time fave moisturizer because it’s light and wonderful. And my suggestion for the lips is Burt’s Bees lip balm, but while your lips are all chapped and cracked, you should put the Clinique yellow face moisturizer on them. YES. Face moisturizer. This is what I use in the winter and it soaks into your lips and is totally amazing.

Okay, enough shilling for Clinique. Happy vacation week!

I’m going to third or fourth the Burt’s Bees. I have it at work, in my car, my purse and the table next to the couch :P And I buy all my facial cleansers and moisturizer from Ayelet17 on etsy. She has amazing products that she makes in small batches and sells for decent prices. She is the only thing I’ll buy now and my skin is super acne prone and I only get the errant blemish around my time of the month.

  • All in one solution: coconut oil.

Try using regular old sugar as a facial scrub in the shower.

When you get out of the shower/bath and you are still wet, use the coconut oil as a moisturizer for your skin and lips.

Throughout the day, moisturize your lips thoroughly with coconut oil.

How do you not chew your lips off?!?! I would be making my lips worse by constantly licking the coconut off them :)

I’m a big fan of Origin’s moisturizer. DUDE, I made cobbler this weekend. Blueberry. I swear it’s the best summer dessert there is.

  • Ditto Heather on the Kiehl’s. Lip Balm No. 1 is awesome. I prefer the tube version over the one in the pot.

I love all of Dermalogica’s products, especially their moisturizer. Haven’t ordered any recently, but I get a great deal from whatgreatskin.com

  • My best friend moved to Arizona from Florida and according to her the best Moisturizer ever created is Burt’s Bees “Carrot Day Cream” she says thier chaostick is amazing as well and pretty cheap considering how well it works, I use the Carrot day cream day and night and have noticed the lessening of spots and wrinkles even tho it doesnt say it will do that!!

Hi. just found your site and started reading. hilarious! for the lips, try Eucerin’s aquaphor. comes in a box with two small tubes. target, cvs, all those should carry the stuff. my derma got me hooked on it years ago when my lips were cracking from taking accutane. Not sure what to suggest for the face, but take a peek at paula’s choice cosmetics. i adore her line for oily, acne prone skin. good luck!
