Ha to the B

Since BlogHer, Slappy and I have been toying with the idea of getting a new camera.

You see, our camera is from around 1999, and while that digital technology was pretty rocking in 1999, the fact that you click the button to take the picture and 10 minutes later it flashes, doesn’t make it a very useful camera. That and when I showed the camera to one of my seat mate on the party plane to Chicago, she LAUGHED AT ME. Seriously. It’s bad.

So we talked about it, researched and then yesterday, purchased. I am now the proud owner of a Canon RebelXS something or other, big ass DSLR camera. Because if you’re going to get a digital camera, you may as well get a big fucking digital camera with a big ass lens. It’s SO pretty. And awesome. And makes me feel like a great photographer, even though I can’t shoot without autofocus to save my life.

I brought the new camera to the birthday bash with my in-laws last night and took upwards of 60 pictures. Probably about 20 of them were total crap, but the rest you could at least determine the subject of the shot. So that’s a start.

There’s just something about the feel of the camera. I love imagining what image I’m going to capture (followed by a brief moment of sadness when I totally don’t capture it) and the surprise of what shows up on my screen after the flash dulls.

So if you’ll indulge me, on this the night before the neurologist appointment that I’ve definitely put WAY too much hope in, while I’m uncomfortable from swallowing a pill and going to bed, allowing it to dissolve and irritate the shit out of my esophagus, here are my pictures. Hopefully there’s a new flickr widget on the side bar so I won’t have to link you every time I upload new stuff, but no promises (right now, the widget links itself back to the blog. I’m giving it time in hopes that it’ll fix itself. And because I cannot seem to fix it myself). My WordPress abilities are still being developed. Slowly.

I think I can safely say I’ve found a whole new world of procrastination. One that comes with bright lights and excuses to be on the internet.

  • Fun!

My first day with the SLR including taking forever to figure out why all my pics were blurry. Turns out I had it set to manual not auto-focus!

I added you as a contact on flickr, hope you don’t mind!

  • Thanks for sharing… Can’t wait to upgrade my camera to DSLR.

Yes, you have discovered my favorite procrastination method . I am hoping I can talk my nephew into helping me label all my photos while on vacation later this month.

  • You’re doing great!! And auto focus? Yeah, I only use manual focus if it’s the ONLY way to get the shot in clearly (through a fence, etc). Try to use the flash as little as possible – natural light always takes the best shots. And there’s no hurry to get off auto-everything – just shoot til you’re ready to try something new!

My fav thing about the DSLR is the fact that I can play – take 50 picture on 50 settings of one object just so I can see how it changes.

(and apparently, I’m writing comment books tonight!) heh

  • I’ve taken tons of photography classes from fairly accomplished teachers, and they all say, “why would you NOT use autofocus if it’s an option?” Like pgoodness said, sometimes it’s the ONLY way to shoot through something, but otherwise Autofocus is totally awesome. Off to look at your pictures now!

Great camera. I have the same one. Love it.

Good luck at the neurologist tomorrow! I’ll have you in my thoughts all day and be sending you love and positive energy from Colorado. I’ll also focus good healing abilities on that neurosurgeon too – so no matter what she’ll be able to figure out what the heck is going on – it’ll be like the medical red sea parting right there in the doctor’s office for ya!! Ha!! :-)
