Never Underestimate the Power of Twitter

I know that people (ahem, my husband) think that Twitter is annoying. Or overrated. Or useless. Or all of those put together. Well doubters, today, twitter saved my ass. Like almost literally.

I know you’ll be shocked to hear it, but it was yet ANOTHER day of calamity on the train. The morning was fine and well. I got to class on time without doing anything I’d deem as stupid. Which is a freaking miracle. Seriously. I’m pretty sure y’all should cannonize my ass soon.

This afternoon, a friend boarded the train with me and we waited for it to take off. We were both engrossed in (read: totally confused by) an assignment for tomorrow’s 7:30 am class and didn’t hear the announcement.

The conductor (who in my head, is wearing a striped denim Osh Kosh B’Gosh hat, by the way) said something about Baldwin Park, but indicated that it was a temporary issue. Baldwin Park is 3rd stop, so I hoped it was something simple and assumed (yes, I’m an ass) that it couldn’t be that big of an issue otherwise, they wouldn’t actually leave Union Station, right?

And then we got to El Monte, just the 2nd stop and were informed that we wouldn’t be going to Baldwin Park after all. Very few details were given except that another train was stopped at Baldwin Park already, so they really couldn’t do anything about it.

I sighed, went back to my assignment and assumed it was a minor problem. Assuming was really working out for me today.

About 5 minutes passed and a different voice came on to let us know the address of the train station we were at. And then is when my stomach sank. Because, dude, you don’t give out the address of the train stop for a short delay.

And then, they came on and told us that the delay would be “indefinite” and we might want to consider alternate transportation.

Shit.

And so I bitched and swore reached out to Twitter. Well, you can see for yourself.

In case you were wondering, no, I’m not prone to theatrics when angry. Nor to saying the f-word.

I also didn’t eat a 3 serving bag of gummy bears from the stress of it. That clearly did not happen.

After a wait, I got a message from a twitter friend asking me exactly where I was and where I was going. And after some communicating about locations, Miss came and picked my ass up. She drove me the 20+ miles to my car, in traffic, just because she’s a kickass kind of person.

So next time you feel tempted to rag on twitter, remember that it got my ass home today. And go show Miss some love. The girl is awesome sauce. Seriously.

(And, look, I know this is politically incorrect, but I’m sorry, if you’re going to commit suicide, do it at home. You’re being selfish and doing something like this DURING RUSH HOUR, is simply not okay. Nevermind that I was SUPPOSED to be on the train that struck the guy. I can’t even begin to imagine how those train passengers or that conductor feel right now. It’s just wrong. Sad, but wrong.)

It was really no big deal. I think that we all get opportunities to do the right thing once in awhile and I just hope that this helps someone else make the choice to do it.

Plus you’re good company! :) Just glad to help you get home safely and at a decent hour.

  • Twitter got me the most amazing deal on my honeymoon hotel I can’t even repeat the rate for fear it will disappear. Twitter is totally worth the money it saved me for that alone.

My hubby feels the same way about twitter, that it’s a giant waste of time, but I can’t tell you how many times my “tweet friends” have come to my rescue on many of subjects! Its a great way to reach a lot of people in many ways. I am so glad that someone was able to be there for you! Shows that great people are always out there! She’s awesome!

I can’t imagine being on the train that happened to. Suicide is a selfish act. How horrid.

And why do you keep getting on that train? Are you just waiting for it to be sucked into the air by a space ship or something? I think I would avoid the train like the swine flu if I were you.
