Y’all are idiots.

Okay, maybe not ALL of you.

Yesterday a dear friend of mine linked an article on Facebook and I think that it has profoundly impacted my opinion of the human race.  Because some of you are fucking stupid.  I’m sorry, but you are.

“One poll question indicative of how difficult it is to gain public understanding on a complicated issue asked if respondents thought the government should ‘stay out of Medicare,’ something inherently impossible. 39% said yes.”

Oh. my. God.

Keeping the government out of Medicare, a FEDERALLY RUN PROGRAM (hey, Federal means run by the national government.  Just FYI), would be REALLY difficult to do, I imagine.  But hey, if that’s what y’all want, then why the hell not?  Maybe we SHOULD see what would happen when the system burns itself to the ground.  Yes.  That would be SO much more reasonable than involving government in your health care.  OF COURSE.

But wait, there’s more.  At the end of the article, there’s a post-script.

“The poll also finds that only 62 percent of respondents believe that President Obama was born in America. Of the 38 percent who either don’t believe or are unsure, some think he was born in Indonesia, Kenya, the Philippines, or France.”

Okay, I’m just going to put this one out there.  Does it seem curious that 61% of people polled knew that the government ran Medicare and 62% know that Obama was born in the United States?  It’s almost like 38-39% of the people surveyed were uneducated fucking stupid.

I’m not even done.

“Six percent of the total poll respondents also don’t think Hawaii is a U.S. state.”

I don’t know how to deal with that sentence.  I mean, do they not think Hawaii is a state because they don’t like it?  (Those Hawaiians are unAmerican hippies.  I declare them terrorists foreigners.)  Or, is it because they are STUPID?  Seriously.  Come on.  Hawaii?  Really?

There you have it.  Please understand if I say that I’m still a little hesitant to believe all of the “educated” opinions about health care reform.  I think some of you are confusing educated with stupid.

… wow. I’m almost impressed at the level of stupidity here. No, wait … that’s /de/pressed. What a very sad statement on our society. :/

I read this 3 or 4 times just so my brain could process the idiocy of this situation. I want to know who these people are and if they know what it means to be in America.

  • That kind of ignorance is infuriating – and extremely perplexing.

  • I love this country. Truly I do. And I understand the need for varying opinions. And the need for compromise. And I know that some are underserved. Just as a great many have more than they need. I know that some are smart. And many are not very smart at all. Most of us are ‘normal’. But they really ought to shoot the ones that are just fucking STOOPID.

You know, I always want to know the source of these polls and how they were conducted. What is the politic agenda behind the people skewing, I mean, giving the results? Hey, I learned this skepticism, I mean fact-checking, in grad school! Enjoy the journey and don’t give up the faith on most people. I still have some left after teaching for 18 years.

  • I’d heard these findings earlier and I’m still shaking my head at them. On the one hand, I’m not all that surprised — most people ARE basically ignorant when it comes to stuff like this. Add in the political crap and it’s a recipe for disaster.

  • Girl, you are so right. The Medicare thing would crack my ass up if it weren’t so sad. I read a Yahoo/Politico article last week that said that Obama has a problem selling his health care reform bill to seniors because they don’t want the government interfering in their health care and Medicare gets extremely high satisfaction ratings. What?!?!?! This is exactly why I was saying I find it hard to find my voice in this debate. There are so many people that have no freakin’ clue what they’re talking about that their drowning out people who do. Sigh. Oh, and you rock. :)

  • If our government wasn’t so busy covering up the fact that Hawaii isn’t real and is in fact a television set, sitting next to the “Moon” maybe it could go dip its toe into Medicare & educating people on geography.

    Wait.

    What?

(You know what they say: once you are dumb, you are dumb for a long time.)

  • Today is actually Hawaii’s 50th anniversary of being our 50th state. Huzzah! It’s taken 50 years, and people still don’t know. I guess them there local papers don’t cover the most recent news.

Soooo, Hawaii’s B-day is in 1959, and Obama’s is in 1961. I can do that math; can you?

  • It’s stuff like this that make me think voting should not be a right for all citizens, but a privilege awarded to people who prove themselves worthy of contributing to society.

Okay, so I saw a poll asking people if they believed Obama is the antichrist. So, my question is this: Is it the polled who respond or the pollsters who come up with these questions to begin with who are stupid?

And, I am almost a senior. I voted for Obama. I am fine with Medicare, grateful even. I think we need healthcare reform (and educational reform as well).

I just don’t like the entire package that’s being proposed…or the fact that there are such diverse interpretations of the plan.

  • I was never more desperate for healthcare than today. And it pisses me off that people are so misinformed that I’m going to have to continue dealing with $200 doctor visits. Or my father who was diagnosed with cancer last year had to rely on the charity organizations in order to get treatment. And no one will ever insure him because of preexisting conditions (cancer and diabetes).

I live in West Virginia, and some people still doesn’t know that it isn’t just the western part of Virginia.

Have you ever noticed that when something big happens that the news always finds some loser on the street or in a bar to ask their opinion of the story? As if the dumbest people in the world can’t wait to be on the news!!!!

I concur that a lot of people are morons. As for healthcare, it used to bother me that so many people had welfare benefits with a medical card. I work in the medical field, and quite frankly, I am just glad that all those people are getting healthcare. Everyone deserves to be treated equally when it comes to their health and well being, and not every hard working person has access to insurance. So I say FREE INSURANCE TO EVERYBODY NO MATTER THE COST!!!!!! CHINA HAS PLENTY OF MONEY TO LOAN THE US!!!!!

Those are the type of people who totally believe forwards.

    UGH.

  • I remember once being part of a serious debate at lunch with a bunch of coworkers. The debate topic? HOW MANY STATES THERE WERE. You wouldn’t think this would be a debate, but there was a large continguent of people who thought there were 52.
